How will I know what updates have been installed in windows 8

We keep an update history in Windows Update so that you can check which updates were installed and when. You can also use this list to remove specific updates, but it's usually not a good idea to remove them unless you have a specific reason.

To view your update history

1.       Open Windows Update by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), tapping or clicking Settings, tapping or clickingChange PC settings, and then tapping or clicking Update and recovery.

2.       Tap or click View your update history.

How To Access Advanced Startup Options in Windows 8 or 8.1

The Advanced Startup Options menu in Windows 8 is the central fix-it location for the entire operating system.

From here you can access Windows 8 diagnostic and repair tools like Refresh Your PC, Reset Your PC, System Restore, Command Prompt, and much more.
Advanced Startup Options is also where you access Startup Settings, the menu that includes Safe Mode, among other startup methods that could help you access Windows 8 if its having problems starting.

The Advanced Startup Options menu should appear automatically after two consecutive startup errors. However, if you need to open it manually, there are six different ways to do so.

The best way to decide which method to use to open Advanced Startup Options is to base your decision on what level of access you have to Windows 8 right now:

If Windows 8 starts normally: Use any method, but 1, 2, or 3 will be easiest.

If Windows 8 does not start: Use method 4, 5, or 6. Method 1 will also work if you can at least get to the Windows 8 logon screen.
Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: Accessing Advanced Startup Options can take anywhere from a few seconds, to a few minutes, depending on which method you use.

Applies To: All of these means of getting to the Advanced Startup Option menu works equally well in any edition of Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

Method 1: SHIFT + Restart

1. Hold down either SHIFT key while tapping or clicking on Restart, available from any Power icon.
   
   Tip: Power icons are available in Windows 8 from either the Settings charm or from the logon/lock screen.
   
   Note: This method does not seem to work with the on-screen keyboard. You'll need to have a physical keyboard connected to your computer or device to open the Advanced Startup Options menu this way.
    
2. Wait while the Advanced Startup Options menu opens

 

Method 2: PC Settings

1. Swipe from the right to open the charms bar.
   
   Tip: If you have a keyboard, use WIN+I and then skip to Step 3.
    
2. Tap or click on Settings.
    
3. Tap or click on Change PC settings at the bottom of the charms bar.
    
4. Choose Update and recovery from the list of options on the left of the PC settings window.
   
   Note: Prior to Windows 8.1, choose General instead and then skip to Step 6.
    
5. Choose Recovery.
    
6. Locate Advanced startup, at the bottom of the list of options on your right.
    
7. Tap or click on Restart now.
    
8. Wait through the Please wait message until Advanced Startup Options opens.

 

Method 3: Shutdown Command

1. Open Command Prompt in Windows 8.
   
   Tip: Another option is to open Run if you can't get Command Prompt started for some reason.
    
2. Execute the shutdown command in the following way:

shutdown /r /o

Note: Save any open files before executing this command or you'll lose any changes you've made since your last save.
 

3. To the You're about to be signed off message that appears a few seconds later, tap or click on the Close button.
    
4. After several seconds, during which nothing seems to be happening, Windows 8 will then close and you'll see a Please wait message.
    
5. Wait just a few seconds more until the Advanced Startup Options menu opens.

How to Fix Windows 8.1 Update Issues

With any new software update on any device, there are going to be small hiccups, little issues that cause users to not be able to download the update even though they should be able to. Windows 8.1, the free update for tablets, desktops and notebooks running Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system isn’t any different.

Since its release users have reported random issues with not being able to download the update. Here’s what to do when Windows tells you your Windows 8.1 install couldn’t be completed.

Before proceeding, it’s a good idea to simply close the Windows Store app by clicking or tapping on its top and dragging it to the bottom of our screen. Then trying the update again. This could fix your issue and save you from having to proceed with the rest of this process. If that still hasn’t helped then continue.

The first thing you want to do if you see the error above on your screen is to restart your Windows 8 devices and try again. Remember to save any work you’ve been doing in the background before you restart first. After you’ve restarted, don’t open the Windows Store app.

If you’re still having trouble downloading the update. You’re going to need to open the Windows 8 Command Prompt. Go to the Start Screen by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard or by pressing the Windows button underneath your device’s display.

Right-click anywhere on the Start Screen and click on the All Apps button.

Now, find the Command Prompt option in the list of installed apps. Don’t left-click on it. Instead, right-click on it and select Run As Administrator from the menu on the bottom. Tablet users should place their finger on Command Prompt and then pull down on the app slightly to see the app menu.

In the menu type ‘net stop wuauserv’ then hit enter on your keyboard.

Now type ‘net stop bits’ then hit enter on your keyboard again.

Now open a file window by going back to the Desktop. Go the following location by manually typing it into the address bar or by copy and pasting it into the address bar in a file window: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. Delete everything inside that folder.

Now go back to the Command Prompt and type in ‘net start wuauserv’ then hit enter.

Next type ‘net start bits’ then hit enter.

Now head to the Windows Store and attempt to download Windows 8.1 again.

Getting error code when installing windows 8.1 that windows cannot format this disk error code 0x8004242d

1. Insert the install DVD (ok )
2. Boot into the setup process (ok )
3. Get to the point where you need to select a partition (Error: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information" ) and click Load Driver
4. Insert driver DVD (i have USB )
5. Locate the storage driver, in my case the AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller (ok - Intel ICH9R AHCI )
6. Notice the message "Windows cannot be installed on this disk. (Show details)" at the bottom (ok )
7. Insert the install DVD back into the drive (still in the drive )
8. Expand the advanced drive options (ok )
9. Create a New partition consuming some amount of space, in my case all of it (ok )
10. Windows says it had to do some funky stuff, click OK (didn't show )
11. Notice that there is a 200MB system partition and a new primary partition (only one partition )
12. Select the new primary partition and click Next (still error: 0x80300001 )

Partitions made by installer are correct, formated and can be used under Window 8,8.1 x64.

How to use the Startup Settings boot menu in Windows

The Startup Settings boot menu allows you to change various settings that affect how Windows 8 starts up as well as providing a launching point into Windows 8 Safe Mode. To access the Startup Settings boot menu in Windows 8, you need to do so via the Advanced Startup options menu.

To restart your computer into the Advanced startup options menu please go to the Windows 8 Start Screen and type Advanced. When the search results appear click on the Settings category as shown below.

Now click on the option labeled Advanced startup options and you will be brought to the General PC Settings screen. Scroll down to the bottom until you see an option labeled Advanced startup. Click on the Restart now button and Windows 8 will restart your computer and go directly into the Advanced Startup options menu.

Now click on the Troubleshoot button and then the Advanced options button. You will now be at the Advanced options screen where you should click on the Startup settings option.

At the Startup Settings screen, click on the Restart button. Your computer will be restarted and brought into the Startup Settings menu as shown below.

Disk check runs each time Windows 8/8.1 starts ?

on multi-boot systems (Windows 8or 8.1 is installed along with an older version of Windows or some other operating system) you need to disable the Fast Start-up feature in Shutdown settings. The feature (previously known as Hybrid Boot) enables significantly shorter load times while Windows 8/8.1 starts after a shutdown or sleep/hibernation, but the file that contains fast boot information can be damaged by starting another version of Windows or another OS (Linux, for example). This causes Windows to run a disk check each time.

To resolve the issue, open Control Panel in Windows 8 or 8.1. Type "power" into search box and click Change what the power buttons do.
In the Define power buttons and turn on passwordprotection window, click Change settings that are currently unavailable.

Then, in the Shutdown settings section, clear the Turn on fast start-up (recommended) check box and click the Save changes button.
